Sem C: Monitor Systems and New technologies

This is a brand new addition to our steadily expanding array of quality training courses. This seminar will cover all that you need to know about monitor systems and give you hands on experience in mixing for monitors.

The Course is split into 5 sections:



Why we need a monitor system

During this section the training will cover, the basics of monitor systems and seek to answer some crucial questions

  • Competing PA systems
  • Volume wars
  • How many mixes?
  • Do we need a separate monitor mixer?

Choosing the right equipment

This section is dedicated to how engineers, system designers or purchasers can make the right decisions about the right solution for them.

  • How to design the right system for an event or venue
  • Monitor speaker dispersion asymmetric or coaxial
  • Monitor wedges verses small personal monitors and Drum Fills
  • Interaction with Microphones
  • Multicores and how the signal is split.

In Ear Monitors

In ear monitors are a very popular monitor solution that help reduce the stage sound - in this section you will be looking at the following questions:

  • The relative advantages and disadvantages
  • Can they be mixed from front of house?
  • Achieving the silent stage
  • Personal monitor mixers
  • Using ambient mics for in ears


Setting up a system

This section of the training is no longer theoretical, and covers the key aspects and issues with setting a monitor system up.

  • The use of graphic equalisers
  • Gain structure
  • Phantom power
  • Reverb in monitors
  • Turn the drummer down
  • The problems with back line

Getting involved on stage

The final section is dedicated to helpful and practical advice on dealing with bands and making the engineers life easier.
