Mark Payne is the Technical Director and co founder of SFL Group.

He has a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Birmingham University) and is a studying member of the Institute of Acoustics, currently working towards his IOA Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control.

After gaining mechanical and electronics engineering experience with GEC Gas Turbines, and the National Nuclear Company (1982-1985), Mark followed a 10 year career with Hewlett Packard (1985 to 1995) as a computer systems support specialist, keeping mainframe and UNIX computer systems in order whilst also teaching HP systems administration techniques to a European-wide audience. Mark still holds his position as a Hewlett Packard Certified Professional and is qualified to teach systems administration, performance and fault tolerance. Mark has personally trained more than 2000 computer systems professionals and uses his formidable communication skills today in his unparalleled education of live sound engineers.

SFL offer a range of short training courses under Mark’s leadership. “I think I have trained more sound and event engineers in the last 2 years than I did in the whole of my career in HP!”

Since starting SFL Group with Graham Preston in 1995, Mark has led the technical agenda encompassing the provision of live event solutions. “We are an engineering company. It is not enough to just relying on creative musicianship in terms of the sculpting of sound. We should demand of ourselves the highest discipline in grasping the acoustics and principles behind the spaces that we inhabit and influence.”

Current and recent projects:

  • Sound design and d&b speaker systems refit at Holy Trinity Brompton Church.
  • Sound, lighting and AV systems design for The Globe Conference Centre, Reading.
  • Sound design and FOH engineering for commissioning of Sandy Millar at St Paul’s Cathedral.
  • Supply, training and acoustics consultancy for The River Centre, Tonbridge.
  • Acoustics consultancy for Bagley Baptist Church building project.
  • Sound system designer and lead engineer at Big Chill Festivals (2000-2003)
  • Sound systems designer for Hillsongs UK Colour Conference (Wembley Conference Centre)
  • FOH Sound Engineer for Howard Jones (1999-Current Day)

Mark is currently advancing his knowledge of venue and building acoustics with the Institute of Acoustics. “Over the next two years I will be developing services at SFL to help architects design, and project managers implement, better sounding venues for live events of all kinds. We know how to design, supply and install the best sound, lighting and video solutions available. Next I want SFL to help make better venue spaces for the people to “be in”.
